Begin cleaning the affected skin with a mild cleanser; usually once in the morning and once in the evening (as well as post-exercise). Your physician or dermatologist may recommend a product that he/she feels will benefit you the most. Wash your face from under jaw line to hairline and be sure to thoroughly rinse cleansed skin. For men with acne, shaving is a necessity but must be done carefully. Test electric and safety razors to see which works best with your individual skin. Be sure that the razor is sharp and to shave gently, only when necessary. Women should change pore-clogging cosmetics to those labeled "noncomedogenic," meaning they do not promote the formation of closed pores. Also, it is best to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, suntan, or sunburns. When should I begin taking or applying my acne medications? If you've gone to your physician for a diagnosis and to determine the severity of your acne, chances are that immediate treatment is warranted. Mild acne can resolve itself after a period of time if no intervention is done, but may leave permanent scarring. Because the only sure method for preventing or limiting scarring is treating acne at its outset, treatment should be initiated immediately and for as long as necessary. The more inflammation that is prevented, the less likely your acne is to lead to future scarring. In addition, treating acne early will also lessen the negative social impacts associated with the disease. What shouldn't I do to prevent acne flare-ups? Do Not:
Can stress or food cause an outbreak? Because hormonal changes are associated with stress, and hormones stimulate and overproduction of oil from the oil glands, it is possible. However, stress resulting from the condition itself (e.g. anxiety) may be the major influence to stress-related acne. Acne can wreak havoc on your emotional stability, changing behavior towards individual appearance. When this happens, persons often implement self-treatment that is inappropriate and may aggravate the condition. As far as diet is concerned, there is no scientific evidence to date that a given food will influence acne. However, it is always recommended that you maintain a balanced diet to lessen the possibility of nutrient deficiencies and to promote overall health. Does it matter when I use my medications and Actimine? It is always our recommendation that you check with the dermatologist and/or pharmacist who prescribed and filled your medication for dosaging guidelines. Most physicians agree to take your medications at the same time, every day. If prescribed a medication that requires more than one dose, try to spread these doses out evenly. But in any event, you should always follow your dermatologist's recommendations. Actimine, however, can be taken at any time of the day, and has been successful when used congruently with existing medications. If you suspect there may be potential for nutrient and drug interaction, again, consult with your dermatologist. Progressive Health recommends taking Actimine once daily and/or in between any scheduled dosing of medication(s) that you are currently prescribed.
