The thyroid gland is a small gland located at the front of the neck. It generally weighs less than one ounce. It is made up of two halves, called “lobes”, that are joined in the center by a piece of tissue called the “isthmus”. The thyroid takes iodine and converts it into thyroid hormones. Thyroid cells are the only cells in the body that can absorb iodine. The iodine then combines with the amino acid “tyrosine”. This combination travels throughout the body and regulates the metabolism. The pituitary gland controls the thyroid gland by producing Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). An overactive or under active thyroid can create health problems. A deficiency of thyroid hormone is called hypothyroidism. An excess of thyroid hormone is called hyperthyroidism. |
