A thyroid is a small, butterfly shaped gland in your neck. This gland is responsible for producing hormones used in your body. These hormones have a big impact on many aspects of the body. Hormones released by the thyroid gland determine how fast your heart beats and how quickly you are able to burn calories. If your thyroid gland releases a proper amount of hormones, your body is able to function normally. However, sometimes the thyroid gland produces too little or too many hormones. When this happens, the balance of chemical reactions in your body is upset. If your thyroid gland produces too little hormones, you have a condition known as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid disease). An irregular thyroid gland that produces inadequate amounts of hormones will usually be enlarged. You may even be able to see a “lump” in your neck where the thyroid gland is located (right below the Adam’s apple). This is possible sign of an underactive thyroid gland. If your thyroid gland appears enlarged to you, you may have hypothyroidism. |
